PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influenced depression of the elderly vulnerable people living alone in the public home visiting health service center.
METHODS
The participants for this study were 491 Korean elderly men living in G city. Data were collected from February to July, 2011 using structured questionnaires. chi2-test, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN program were used to analyze the data.
RESULTS
The levels of ADL and IADL of the elderly living alone were higher, and the levels of social support and life satisfaction were lower than the normal elderly. Depression was positively related to ADL and IADL and negatively to social support and life satisfaction in the elderly living alone. In addition, age, fall experience, ADL, IADL and life satisfaction had influence on the depression.
CONCLUSION
The elderly living alone are in a more serious health status, especially in depression than the normal elderly. It is necessary to develop depression controlling intervention programs in order to promote healthy lifestyles for the elderly vulnerable people living alone.

PURPOSE
To examine the effect of the solution-focused group counseling on self-esteem, depression, and hope of unemployed homeless persons, and to develop a nursing intervention program designed to help rehabilitation of the unemployed homeless persons.
METHOD
This study was conducted from July 14 to September 29, 2000, and May 4 to August 17, 2001. The subjects were 30 unemployed homeless persons residing in 1 shelter in Seoul, Korea. This study used a quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, and paired t-test using SPSS WIN program.
RESULTS
1) Self-esteem of the subjects increased significantly after the solution- focused group counseling (t=3.31, p=0.002). 2) Depression of the subjects decreased significantly after the solution- focused group counseling (t=2.05, p=0.046). 3) Hope of the subjects increased significantly after the solution- focused group counseling (t=2.65, p=0.011).
CONCLUSION
The solution- focused group counseling may be considered as an effective nursing intervention program for the unemployed homeless persons by improving their self-esteem and hope as well as reducing their depression. However, the effects of the program should be further addressed through a review study.

PURPOSE
To provide the basic data for nursing intervention to improve the psychosocial adaptation of unemployed homeless by examining the degree of self-esteem, depression, and hope, and the relation of these variables.
METHOD
The subjects were a volunteer sample of 218 unemployed homeless residing at 2 shelters in Seoul and Suwon, Korea. The instruments for this study were Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, Beck's depression inventory, and Miller and Powers's hope scale. Using the SPSS program, the data were analysed by frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
RESULT
1) The degree of self-esteem is, on average, 23.72 points, depression is 24.41 points, and hope is 124.72 points. 2) The degree of self-esteem in the general characteristics of the subjects showed a significant difference by age, marital status, and contact with family. 3) The degree of depression in the general characteristics of the subjects showed a significant difference by age, marital status, and contact with family. 4) The degree of hope in the general characteristics of the subjects showed a significant difference by contact with family. 5) There was a significant positive correlation between the variables of self-esteem and hope, while there was a significant negative correlation between the variables of self-esteem and depression, and hope and depression.
CONCLUSIONS
1) The study identifies psychological characteristics of the homeless. 2) It is required not only to develop nursing intervention programs to improve the degree of self-esteem and hope, and alleviate depression but also to testify the effect of the program. 3) It is needed to develop nursing intervention programs to prevent chronic homelessness.

AbstractAbstract PDF
This study was designed and undertaken to identify the degree of burden of family caregivers for patients who had a stroke as the burden is related to the ADL of the patients. The data were collected from October 3rd, 1997 to March 20th, 1998. The subjects in this study were 126 caregivers as family members and 126 patients with strokes who were hospitalized in two oriental medicine hospitals and four general hospitals located in Taegue and Pusan City. The questionnaires consisted of questions regarding burden(25 items) of caregivers and ADL (25 items) of patients with strokes. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, t-test and ANOV A done with the SPSS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The score for family caregiver's burden was higher than the middle score. 2. The family caregivers' age had statistically significant differences in the degree of burden. 3. The age and sex of patients affected the burden of caregivers significantly. That is, caregivers felt more of a burden when caring for the patient group in their sixties than in any other age group and female patients created more of a burden than male patients. 4. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of caregiver burden according to the level of patient ADL.

The major purpose of this study was to survey the professional self concept of clinical nurses. The subjects consisted of 894 nurses who are working at 10 general hospital in Daegu, Pusan, and Kyungsang-do. The nurses were surveyed from November 22, 1996 to March 7, 1997. The data were analyzed using an SPSS/PC program. The results were as follows: 1. The average score of PSCNI was 72.11 points. And average item score was 2.67 points, this score means mid level in professional self concept. 2. A comparison of the scores for the dimensions of the PSCNI were as follows: the mean item score of professional practice, 2.76 points; satisfaction, 2.39 points; communication, 2.83 points. Thus, the score for communication was highest. 3. The relationship between general characteristics and the PSCNI showed a significant difference in regard to age(P=.000), religion (P=.012), educational level(P=.001), marital status(P=.000), period of nursing career(P=.000) and position(P=.002). But, there were no significant differences with regard to the field of work. In conclusion, this study suggests that we need to develop a program for improving professional self concept of clinical nurses.
